Understanding Tuberculosis & Diagnostic Necessity

Clinical data on transmission pathways, statistical burden, and modern screening steps.

The Public Health Impact of Tuberculosis

One of the top 10 causes of death in Nepal is tuberculosis (TB). In Nepal, it is believed that TB causes roughly 17,000 deaths annually. Mycobacterium tuberculosis is the bacteria that causes tuberculosis. The respiratory system is the main organ affected by the infectious disease tuberculosis, but it can also harm the gastrointestinal, musculoskeletal, neurological, and other bodily systems.

It can present as an inactive (latent) infection or an active one. Symptoms of active instances may include a persistent cough, hemoptysis (blood in the sputum), fever, and unexplained weight loss. According to the National Tuberculosis Prevalence Survey (2018–19), 69,000 new cases of TB are estimated to occur annually in Nepal, reflecting an increase from earlier estimates of 44,000. Currently, about 27,000 persons with TB are successfully diagnosed and placed on targeted clinical treatment cycles each year.

Transmission Pathways & Exposure Realities

TB typically spreads through the air from one person to another. The bacteria enter the atmosphere when a person with active respiratory TB sneezes, coughs, or spits. A person becomes infected when they breathe even a small amount of these bacteria from the surrounding air. Despite being contagious, the illness typically takes a prolonged period of time spent in close contact with the sick individual because the bacteria spread slowly.

💡 Keep in Mind: Since the germs cannot survive for very long outside of the human body, tuberculosis cannot be communicated by a simple handshake or by sharing utensils.
📋 Summary & Patient Profile

There are different types of symptoms of tuberculosis and its clinical profiles vary from one another. Both men and women are equally troubled with TB. Certified clinical screening remains the most effective tool to detect latent cases and arrest the vector path early.

Two-Step Mantoux Diagnostic Method

The Mantoux skin test requires precise placement and a subsequent timeline confirmation reading:

💉 1. Initial Injection Step

A small amount of purified protein derivative (PPD) solution is meticulously injected intradermally into the top layer of skin on the forearm. A tiny, elevated wheal will appear immediately.

🔍 2. Clinic Follow-Up Reading

The patient must return to our laboratory 48 to 72 hours later. A trained professional measures the firm, raised induration area (not the redness) to declare a precise result parameter.
